Discovering the Joy of Real Community

Everyone wants the American Dream... Earn a big paycheck, own a nice home on a large lot, with a garage for two nice cars, perhaps a pool, lots of privacy, and above all...achieve a secure independence. Most Americans strive for this way of life, and many have succeeded. Unfortunately all this success and prosperity still leaves a void.

According to polls, satisfaction and happiness among Americans has been on the decline since World War II. Instead, there is a growing sense of uneasy depression that is reaching epidemic proportions. How could this be?  What are we missing?

Consider life before the 1940’s. Few people had air conditioning. Cars were not common. People did not change jobs and residences often. There was no cable television with live news coverage and 24 hour programming. There were no movie rentals, game boys or ipods. Mostly we had each other. What did that look like?

While walking to the market or the post office you would likely see your neighbors doing the same, or you would pass someone sitting on the porch and stop to chat. Children played with the kids in the neighborhood. They might even be able to walk to Grandmother’s house for a treat. Evening entertainment involved the creativity of friends and family, real friends who cared about one another. In good times you shared the joy and In times of trouble you helped each other get through.

In today’s prosperous society, Americans suffer from what sociologists call individualism. We look out for ourselves, our finances, our possessions. We thought that financial independence was success. It is little wonder then, that according to a recent Gallop poll, Americans are among the loneliest people in the world. Psychiatrists are in huge demand, compassionately listening to our problems, something that, in a different time, a neighbor used to do for free.

Post-war Americans rushed to the suburbs to buy their piece of the pie. Now record numbers are fleeing the cities and suburbs in search of small towns and friendly villages. They are yearning to find an elusive phenomenon, a forgotten way of life, to fill an emptiness in the soul. They are searching for real community.

What is Real Community?

Humans were designed to live in quality relationships with each other. Without these relationships, we cannot thrive. Having a circle of friends whom we trust and can share our highest hopes and deepest fears is not a luxury, but a necessity for a fulfilled life. The following are characteristics of effective community.

Common Place - In all places of effective community, its members live in close proximity.

Pedestrian Accessible - People have more opportunity to connect when they meet face to face with a “hello” and a kind word, instead of through a car window.

Spontaneity - One of the most important characteristics of effective community is the possibility of unplanned gatherings. Small gestures such as inviting a neighbor to sit and share a cup of coffee, to join in a game of pickle ball, or to see the big fish that was just caught go a long way.

Sharing Meals - There is something special about sharing food around a table that allows us to get to know one other and strengthens friendships.

Availability - People who experience a fulfilling sense of community are able to find time in their busy schedules to care for and make themselves available to the people around them.

Traditions - Regularly observed traditions give a group an identity and a closer bond. Monday night football, an early morning coffee gathering and the annual 4th of July potluck all build fond memories.

When these elements come together, you will find an effective community experience that naturally builds a circle of friends who care for, depend upon and enjoy one another.
